The origins of National Best Friends Day seem to have some discrepancies. The claims of when the holiday started vary. Some say 1935; others say 2001; some say it’s not an actual holiday, just a hoax.

“Way back in 1935, the US congress decided to devote one day to pay tribute to close-knit friendships. It’s lighthearted, super fun, and down-right awesome day that should continue to be recognized and celebrated.”

So much confusion and debate. The truth is that it doesn’t matter if it is an actual holiday or not. It’s whether you choose to celebrate it. It’s what having a best friend means to you. How you celebrate the day, real or contrived, and how you honor them.

If you have someone you call a best friend, consider yourself blessed. A best friend is the person you talk to on a good day but especially on a bad day. They bring laughter and joy. They are adding meaning to your life. They are the person you can share anything with. They have your back regardless of your circumstances.

A best friend is there for you in the joys and sorrows of life. They are the person who tells you to pick yourself up if you’ve been struggling, and also the person who picks you up if your heart is breaking.

A best friend is someone who knows your deepest, darkest secrets, and you know the secret is safe with them. They want to see you succeed and become the best person you can be.

So how will you celebrate today? Who do you consider your best friend? Send them a card, a note or flowers. Let them know how much they mean to you. And in the end, be someone whom another would call a best friend.
