This scripture comes from Proverbs – the book that helps us live wisely! It would be beneficial if we heeded the words, whether we believe in God or not. Proverbs can help us make wise choices for the betterment of our lives.
Let’s examine these words line by line...
Firstly, it talks about “Good leaders cultivate honest speech.” If we look at what “cultivate” means, the Oxford Dictionary says, “try to acquire or develop (a quality, sentiment, or skill).” So what quality, sentiment, or skill are we trying to acquire? In this case, the skill is honesty! Everyone could use more honesty – ethics, fairness, equity – it’s all wrapped up in how we want to be treated and treat others.
The second part talks about “they love advisors who tell them the truth.” Wow. We are still talking about the good leaders – in other words, the good leaders should be striving and “cultivating” honesty, and they expect the same from their “advisors.”
Advisor?
Enlightener, helper, mentor, coach, counselor, guide, instructor, confidant, priest, preceptor, and teacher.
I want to suggest we can also add “employees” to this list. If you have an honest boss, they require the same of you.
What are your thoughts? Have you worked for a boss who went above and beyond to be ethical? What about you? Are you an employee known for your truthfulness? Or perhaps you haven’t always been authentic – here is your chance to turn that around. To be fair and just, genuine and honest – it’s always appreciated by those who need to work with you!
