Victoria Day is a federal Canadian public holiday celebrated on the last Monday preceding May 25. It is known as the “official birthday of Canada’s sovereign.”
Since at least 1845, the queen’s actual birthday, the holiday has been commemorated in Canada. The holiday has always been a distinctly Canadian observance, or so I thought; fun fact: Scotland also marks the day. Victoria Day is a federal statutory holiday. Six of the ten provinces and three territories celebrate it as a holiday.
Most Canadians know the holiday as May “two-four” or May long weekend. This is the unofficial beginning of summer in Canada. Many people go camping or to the cottage during this weekend. Signifying we are that much closer to summer.
What will you be doing this May long weekend? Perhaps you will be joining in the festivities in your community to mark the occasion with fireworks or a parade? Are you an avid camper ready to get out into the wild? Will you be relaxing on your deck, sipping your favorite beverage? Or will you start your spring yard cleanup? Or a combination of all the above?
Comment below on what you will be doing this long weekend! Maybe you will inspire someone to try something new!
