The Beat Goes On

A great song comes on the radio – what do you do? Do you sway your body to and fro? Do you want to jump out of your seat? Do you move your arms and hands and dance in your chair or car? Any of these will do for celebrating International Dance Day!

Whether you want to salsa, mamba or foxtrot, maybe you want to dance jazz, ballet, or freestyle. Or you might be more up to date with flexing, aerial bungee, or The Renegade? Today is the day – take your body out of its comfort zone and “dance.” Dance like no one is watching! Allow your inner self to feel free; express your joy or sadness. Allow a song to move you – to live in the moment – or the memory of days gone by, whatever works to get you moving.

You live as long as you dance.” Rudolf Nureyev

History of International Dance Day

International Dance Day was created by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute ITI, the leading partner for the performing arts of UNESCO, in 1982. The date chosen was the birthdate of innovator and scholar, the creator of modern ballet, Jean-Georges Noverre.

This celebration strives to encourage the participation and education of dance through events and festivals held during this date around the world.

So whether you live in Canada or the US, Chile or Europe, or anywhere else worldwide, the day is spent celebrating by DANCING! Make sure you join in! What type of dancing is your favorite? What is the most intricate dance to learn? Share your thoughts below.

Most of all – have fun! Dance the night away!

“I go with the flow. Whatever music you play for me, I’ll dance.” Gael Garcia Bernal
