When I first read this scripture, I was confused: “If I have my plans, but God orders them”: then what is the point of free will? Doesn’t that mean he is a puppet master and I am his puppet? I was having a hard time understanding the meaning of this verse. I felt like I was missing something important.

But after doing some research and finding this commentary, it made more sense. The verse “In their hearts, humans plan their course” or another version: Deviseth his way – “Thinks it out with anxious care, yet it is the Lord and He only who directs the steps.”

I like how Albert Barnes explains this scripture. As I reread it, it made sense. We anxiously try to figure out what to do next. We get stuck on the “ifs” in life. But this verse gives us hope that God can direct our steps even when we make a choice and are unsure of the outcome. He leads us into what is next. It all “works out in the end.”

My husband often says, “Stop fretting, have faith that God will work it all out.” And guess what, despite all my analysis, pros and cons lists, and indecisiveness, all I get is frustrated. When I trust He knows best to lay down my plans, I find I am ok regardless of what comes. He sees the bigger picture when all I see is a microscopic dot.
